Car and Trailer
Car and Trailer
If you passed your driving test after 1st January 1997 you have category B (car) entitlement only, which restricts you to motor vehicles with a "maximum authorized mass" (MAM) of 3.5 tonnes with trailers up to 750kg MAM, (4.25 tonnes combined). Larger trailers may be towed provided the combination of the trailer and towing vehicle does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. In order to tow trailers which exceed the above weight restrictions, you must take another test of your ability to competently handle a larger trailer. Caravans, horse-boxes, boat trailers, agricultural and building trailers will all fall into this category. To tow these legally your licence must have the B+E (car + trailer) entitlement. Passing the B+E test entitles drivers to tow trailers up to 3.5 tonnes MAM with vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM.
