Theory
You do not need to have passed you theory before you start learning to drive, however, You are required to pass a theory test before you are able to book a practical test. This theory test is split into two parts.
• Theory questions – in 57 mins you are required to answer correctly 43 out of 50 questions in a multiple-choice format.
• Hazard perception –The test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting about one minute. The clips feature various types of hazards that you could face as a driver on the road, such as other vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. You are required to respond to the video clip by pressing a mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing which could result in the driver having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction. The earlier the developing hazard is spotted, and a response made, the higher the score. Candidates can score up to five marks on each hazard and the test contains 15 possible hazards. The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75.
A number of books and CD-ROMs can be supplied to help you prepare thoroughly for the theory test. We give all student theory mock test papers to compleat in their own time. The papers are marked and scored so the instructor and student can monitor progress. If you don’t have a computer we can arrange access for you so that you can practice for the hazard perception part of the test.
We welcome students with learning diffculties.
